Environmental Defense Fund

Data Visualization | UI/UX Design

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) approached Outright to help visualize their efforts in tracking federal spending on climate innovation. Historically, individuals across the government, NGOs, and private sector would maintain personal spreadsheets to track how funding was allocated between programs, by sector, research stage, and other categories.

We created a key visual of a pie chart that flourishes into a series of sankey graphs to illustrate not only the distribution of dollars but also its contextual scale. We accounted for data experts who’d want to deep dive on individual department programs as well as users who wanted a high-level holistic overview so they could make an informed case for additional funding.

Additional context and nuance is provided through tooltips, methodology documentation, and an editorial blog where the EDF can provide insightful views of the data in the tracker. Check out the tracker.
